An earthquake is a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden breaking and shifting of large sections of Earth's rocky outer shell. Earthquakes are among the most powerful events on earth, and their results can be terrifying. A severe earthquake may release energy 10,000 times as great as that of the first atomic bomb. Rock movements during an earthquake can make rivers change their course. Earthquakes can trigger landslides that cause great damage and loss of life. Large earthquakes beneath the ocean can create a series of huge, destructive waves called tsunamis (pronounced tsoo NAH meez) that flood coasts for many miles.
Earthquakes almost never kill people directly. Instead, many deaths and injuries in earthquakes result from falling objects and the collapse of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Fire resulting from broken gas or power lines is another major danger during a quake. Spills of hazardous chemicals are also a concern during an earthquake.
The force of an earthquake depends on how much rock breaks and how far it shifts. Powerful earthquakes can shake firm ground violently for great distances. During minor earthquakes, the vibration may be no greater than the vibration caused by a passing truck.
On average, a powerful earthquake occurs less than once every two years. At least 40 moderate earthquakes cause damage somewhere in the world each year. About 40,000 to 50,000 small earthquakes--large enough to be felt but not damaging--occur annually.
Dear friends ：
I'm sorry to hear that an earthquake happened to your hometown. The earthquake destroyed your hometown. Lots of houses fell down and some of you can't see your families any longer.
Please don't feel sad. You should believe in the Party, the government and the people in the country. Your heart should be full of wishes because the Party, the government and the people are with you all the time and they take care of you. They try their best to solve your troubles. They give away their money and many things for you and they donate blood for you. So you should take care of yourselves. In the future, you should do something useful for our country to answer for their loves.
In the past hundred years, there have heen frequent natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, mud-rock flows, seismic sea waves, earthquakes, windstorms and the stretching of new deserts. The disasters have killed millions upon millions of people, destroyed countless homes, and wiped out numerous pieces of fertile land.
Now more and more people become aware that those disasters have much to do with what we have done to the earth. We have cut down too many trees in the forests,we have badly polluted the environment, we have shocked our own home-planet time and against with tremendously powerful explosions of nuclear bombs. As a result, climates have become abnormal, rainwater rushes down hillsides angrily, and the underground energy goes up to revenge itself on us.
The earth is our only home-planet. It is urgent for us to stop damaging it, and to do our best to protect it and make it a lovely place suitable to live in, for we have nowhere to go and survive except where we are now.
Yesterday afternoon, when I was sitting in the classroom and listening to the teacher. Suddenly, the screen seemed moving and it started to shake. My teacher stopped his class and then he asked us to calm down. He let the students who were close to the door left first, and then the rest of us ran out of the classroom one by one.
After a while, everything seemed to be normal, the teacher asked us to go back to the classroom. Later I learned that there indeed came the earthquake. I admired our teacher so much, in the important moment, he did not run away, but considered us in the first place. He is a good teacher.
I feel so sorry for your loss, maybe yesterday you're leading a happy life, but this unexpected terrible disaster destoryed all, no one would like that coming. But don't let the earthquake ruin your life and take your sunshine away! I hope you overcome the pain in a short time and get back to school with all your classmates.
Hope you always feel be loved and protected, you must believe that there is a lot of nice people in our society and they're all willing to help if you met any difficulties. I believe you are strong in mind. Life is hard, try to turn this memory into consistant power. No matter what happens, as long as we are together, we will never ever ever ever give up!There is always hope and love
